When asked about the condition of the temples our guide explained with one short thought. We took apart nature to create these. Now nature is taking them back.

There is much debate over the title number of deaths caused by the Khmer Rouge. The estimates range from 1.7-3 million. The victims remains are spread throughout Cambodia in mass graves. 

The genocide and spill over from regional wars has halted the rehabilitation process of most of Angkor Wat’s towering temples. Piles of stone–intended to rebuild the temples—have now gather around their feet, growing moss while they patiently wait to be placed back on their pedestals. 

The reconstruction is slowly underway.
